Letter from the editor

Dear Increment Readers,

In planning for this issue, we found ourselves asking questions that lack easy answers. How responsible are we—as developers, technologists, creators, entrepreneurs, founders—for the health of the environment? And as we work to mitigate the impact of our technologies, luxuries, and modern lives on our beautiful planet, how can we make it easier for others to do the same?

In 2017, Stripe—our publisher—embarked on a journey to become a carbon-neutral company. We knew we were consuming copious amounts of resources—no matter how responsible we tried to be about it—and we knew it was time to make a change. In this issue, we’re sharing the details of that journey, as well as some of the insights and perspectives we’ve gained along the way. From predictions about tomorrow’s grid to the truths and mythologies of rare earth mining, there’s a lot for us all to think about, and a lot still to learn.

We’d love to know what you’re working on in the realms of energy, environment, and carbon neutrality. Reach out to us at @IncrementMag on Twitter, or send an email to environment@stripe.com.

To a happy and healthy 2018 for us all (Earth included),
